Description: Whitby Dene Old People's Home houses elderly people who have been discharged from hospital but find it unable to care for themselves. Some are unwell and bedridden, and attended to by nurses but most remain active. They enjoy a breakfast of cereal and boiled eggs in the morning, before retiring to the lounge. The women read, talk and snooze in a room downstairs. Meanwhile in the men's lounge upstairs the old men smoke and tell stories. One, a former soldier called Tom reads a paperback. The House Matron summons her wards and distributes medicines to the residents. The television room provides evening entertainment before a nightcap of ovaltine and biscuits sends the old people off to bed.
