Summary: A film made to show development of English/drama teaching though age groups.
Title number: 373
LSA ID: LSA/485
Description: A record of drama activity in London's school from beginnings in the nursery to the finished performances of adolescents about to leave education. A young girl's play acting at home continues when she joins the Triangle Nursery School. Older children at a Primary school in Stockwell are filmed using role-play during their lessons in mathematics, English and geography. Physical education classes also provide opportunities for dramatics and dance. Junior pupils at the same school use improvised drama to create characters. Drama is also used in their history lessons. A short piece of storytelling by a teacher is used as an inspiration for drama lessons and encouragement for further study. All of which leads to a performance of a Victorian story of crime and the supernatural before fellow students. William Penn School, Lambeth is used to explore how drama is used in a Secondary School. In this school lessons in history, religious studies and English are all taught with the assistance of drama. Drama students are taken in trips to see plays at venues like the Scala Theatre (on Charlotte St W1), the New Theatre, and The Old Vic. Student performances are shown using group improvisation and dance drama. The film concludes with the school play, which is a performance of Dickens' 'Great Expectations' with pupils, acting, doing make up, and managing the lighting.
