Description: The first film 'Two Thousand Houses for Uxbridge' (Black & White, Sound) explores the problems caused by lack of housing in the period after the Second World War and records the council's response. The film follows the building of new council houses, from the surveying and design stages through the construction of whole new estates. Construction company Morgan's are seen at work on housing at Corwell Lane, Harefield, Cowley, The Larches, St Johns and Colham Manor. In 1954 the 2000th house built post-war is officially opened by the Bishop of Kensington. In 1958 a new three storey block of flats in the centre of Uxbridge, Cochrane House, is officially opened by Miss Mary Cochrane, sister of the alderman in who's honour it was named. In the second, untitled, film made by C.B. Mann (Black & White (with occasional colour sequences, Silent) we follow a day in the life of a family who have just moved to Uxbridge family (working at Bell Punch and in Suters). The story of the family is followed by a sequences of shots of the Hillingdon area taking in its parks, sporting facilities, camping opportunities, beauty spots and a disproportionate amount of the local public houses (including the Black Horse, the Swan Hotel, the Isleworth Arms and Ye Pear Tree Inn). This visual exploration of the borough also includes views of Hillingdon Hospital, Cowley Railway Station, the ABC Regal Cinema, Little Britain Lake, the Pyghtle and Leyland buses heading off to Clacton.
