Description: The Pleasure of Leisure' was the event theme at the 9th Local History Conference. The video begins with some general views about the Winston Churchill Hall in Ruislip, as stall holders begin to put books, maps and images and attendees register and take their seats. A later trip around the conference hall stalls takes in some old board and ball games. Iris Long of the Pinner Local History Society introduces the conference and hands over to Jim Gold the events planner. The morning session looked at the village in the Middle Ages. Extracts are shown from a Pinner Local History Society presentation on 'Song, Dance & Drama Through the Seasons', a morris dance performance of 'The Flowers of May', and an explication of morris by one of the dancers. Some performers act out a scene from Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. Pat Lock speaks about Pinner Fair/King Edward's Fair. The Herga Mummers perform a play with song and dancing. More dance comes in a performance by The Ladies of Ruislip (including a male interloper) acting out materials from different historical periods. The afternoon session includes a look at the archaeological evidence visible in Park Wood by Ruislip, Northwood & Eastcote Local History Society. Other talks look at hunting within Ruislip, horse racing in West Drayton, and the Pinner Donkey Derby. Barnet & District Local History Society talk about the educational clubs and societies of Barnet. A man in Victorian costume performs a monologue about railway delays. The Wembley History Society gives an illustrated talk about the Old Welsh Harp public house on the Edgware Road. David Terry talks about the marathon in the 1908 Olympic Games, which ended in the White City Stadium at Shepherd's Bush.
