Description: A steady and meticulous shot introduces us to the Chilton House in Northwood, detailing the face of the property, showered in foliage. Jessie Lindley, “Granny Jessie”, the mother in-law of Ed Chilton - the man behind the camera - steps into the scene. We are treated to a thorough tour of the grounds: the garden, the well-kept hedges and trees surrounding the house. In the near distance, the spire of the local Holy Trinity Church is visible. The camera labours over the yard with pride, peering up to reveal Granny Jessie leaning out the second story window to enjoy the scenery.
Then, it’s off to see the neighbourhood. The camera places us within walking distance of the Chilton’s most local public house, The Gate – situated on the very same Rickmansworth Road as Chilton House. A car veers in our general direction. An establishing road sign points towards Rickmansworth and Moor Park, Ruislip and Ealing, and Pinner and London.
Chilton House yields plenty of horticultural delights: a shot from within the property’s greenhouse shows rich vines of tomatoes hanging triumphantly from the ceiling, and other varieties of plants and herbs proliferate throughout the room.
Ed Chilton’s wife-to-be Janet Lindley is seen lounging on a bench in the garden, enjoying the company of the family’s Staffordshire bull terrier. She poses and gestures to the camera, but the dog is easily distracted. A charming sequence ensues in which Janet plays with the dog on the property’s large expanse of grass. We are then given an intimate look at Janet as she sits, smiles, and chats to the camera. Her voice is inaudible, but her disposition conveys her charm and good-manner.
Janet and her mother, Jessie, step out into the garden with the dog, while Jessie clasps a cat in her arms. She sets the cat free, and the terrier bursts into pursuit.
The camera lingers on the family’s luxurious Alvis TA-14 convertible, while Ed’s mother and father, Mary and Thomas Chilton, greet us in the entranceway. They briefly promenade in the garden, before we’re swiftly invited into the house’s interior. The sitting room is tied together with a large rug, the fireplace crackling off to the side. Mary relaxes with a newspaper before the fire. A tall cabinet displays an impressive collection of china and other crockery.
Finally, we join the family for socialising and frivolity. Thomas sits, conversing, with a cigarette propped in his hand. Janet is perched while engrossed in a magazine. And the concluding moments see Ed and Janet sat together in a moment of intimacy.
