Description: The film starts with the Chilton’s (Ed Chilton and Janet Lindley) wedding. It’s a lovely sunny day and the scene is set in a well-kept garden with lots of flowers. Establishing shots of garden at Chilton House which was immediately opposite the Holy Trinity Church, Rickmansworth Road, Northwood, Middlesex, HA6 2RP. We see guests enter the church; all dressed up, dog running around the lawn, and 2 young bridesmaids and a pageboy dressed in white. We watch the bride in her gown, large veil and bouquet, walk towards the church arm-in-arm with her brother (Janet Lindley) and brother (Morton Chilton, standing in for deceased Father). Shortly after we see her walking out, this time with her husband (Ed Chilton), both smiling at each other and their guests. The wedding scenes end with the couple driving off and guests in 1950s fashions shuffling out of the church. 00:04:07
Following the weddingwe are taken to the coast. We see the couple, mainly Janet Chilton, walking through the streets and sights of the city, in a summer dress and sunglasses. Shots of fisher boats in the harbour, streets of white buildings with balconies and flowers, dogs sleeping in the shade, children riding their bikes, etc. Set a lovely scene for a sunny holiday. During the trip there are various scenes of Janet Chilton stroking cats, dogs, and even a donkey. They visit the beach, filled with white parasols, with waves crashing on the sand. Panoramic shots of the town offer a lovely view of the white houses and palm trees, with green forests and mountains in the background.
This holiday is followed up by another trip that begins at a train station, were we see a train with a sign in Russian and English reading ‘Leningrad- Helsinki’. The scenery here is clearly different; busy streets with cars, tall buildings, and an overall industrial-looking city. There are also shots of a large boats in a harbour, and women playing with children in the streets. Scenes are also filmed from inside a car as well as an airplane, watching the plane land, concluding the holiday scenes.
Next, another change in music to an upbeat piano, and we are taken to a house with a sign reading ‘Coppers’. This house goes on to reappear throughout the film, assuming it’s the family home. We are introduced for the first time to the children of the family. A little girl, about 3, runs around outside, as the mother walks out with the second child in her arms, a baby boy. There appears to be a celebration at the house, as we see shots of guests dressed up walking across their garden.
Following, we see a change in both music and scenery, as we watch a family-day trip to the beach. The couple stroll on the sand with their two children. Going back to the family home, the two children pose with their mother on the front steps of the house, holding a daffodil. Lovely shot of all three of them, mother and two children, playing on the lawn holding hands.
Then there are jumps between scenes at home and on trips to different locations. They travel on a large tourist boat, with people sitting in hammocks in their sunglasses. Panoramic shots of the surroundings show mountains, sea, and small town. Then on a ferry, with shots from aboard, the boat pulling in to an industrial port. Another trip is to a lake, where they set up a picnic in the forest, and watch as the father gets into a rowing boat. Next are shots of a large city, mother walking out of Park Avenue Hotel, and they walk through public gardens with a large fountain in the centre.
Back at home the woman dances on the lawn, pushing a large baby stroller. The youngest child is passed into the arms of an older woman, possibly the grandmother.
Once more, they’re back on a beach, dipping their feet in the water, with waves crashing on the shore as the eldest child collects pebbles. Both brother and sister play on the swing in the garden at home, pushing each other. The swing is then taken over by the mother in her swimming costume, as the two children play in a paddle pool next to her. On the beach again the children play with the sand, with buckets and shovels, and we see shots of the two riding horses.
Then we are introduced to the new addition in the family. With a change in music we see the mother holding her newborn, wrapped in a blanket in the family house garden. The two children, older now, run in circles around them.
Back to the beach, but now as a family of 5, the children gaze onto the sea as a large cruise liner sails by. With a change in scenery, and the three children significantly older now (eldest about 10), the family goes hiking. Shots of the lake and beautiful mountains around it. Finally, back to the beach where all three children run into the sea. The whole family, including dog, enjoy a day on the beach, playing with the sand and the water.
