Description: This charity appeal film begins with a close-up of a silver clasp on a nurse’s belt and the Freemason’s symbol, followed by an inter-title, ‘Your Hospital.’ The scene opens with a family playing frisby in the sun, and the narrator remarking that we all require a hospital stay at some point in our lives. A St John’s Ambulance pulls up to the hospital and staff remove a man on a stretcher from the ambulance. The narrator explains that people are usually terrified of hospital stays, but hope for compassion and concern to put them at ease. This is all possible at the largest independent hospital in the country, the Royal Masonic Hospital in West London.
The gentleman is taken into hospital and is reassured by a nurse. He is moved into a ward with four beds. An aeroplane lands and there are scenes of a busy airport. The narrator comments that the hospital has an international reputation for good quality care. A man arriving from the airport talks to a nurse in the modern hospital waiting room who is losing his eye sight.The narrator states that the hospital and nursing home has been around since 1911. There is a scale model of the hospital interspersed with images of the exterior of the hospital in the sunshine, with the union flag flying. The narrator explains that the hospital has grown, and includes nursing quarters, labs and a physiotherapy suite.
There is a classroom with student nurses being taught by a matron about the hip joint, the student nurses are reading in a library and enjoying some free time playing table tennis. There are interior scenes of a nurse’s living quarters. Next the patient that arrived by plane is observed talking to a doctor in a consultation and the doctor explains that he has a cataract. There is a montage of photos of operating theatres, hospital staff and nurses. The department where surgical equipment is cleaned is illustrated and a patient is prepped for theatre. A dumbwaiter is used to transport the cleaned surgical equipment to the operating theatre. A surgeon operates on the overseas patient’s eye.
Patients in the recovery room are being tended to by nurses and operating staff.
The histology lab analyse blood and other fluids, lab technicians test specimens with a microscope. A female patient under-goes an x-ray of the abdomen. A nurse takes a female patient’s pulse and temperature, the laundry department features with the cleaning staff keeping the wards clean. There are shots of the hospital shop and cafeteria, with nurses enjoying their lunch. There is a close-up of the patients’ meals, which include, amongst others, a plate full of salad.
There is a Church service in the hospital chapel with nurses and patients both attending the service, singing hymns. The man who had his eye operated on leaves the hospital with sun glasses on and is discharged by a nurse. The narrator remarks that the hospital is available to subscribing Freemasons and their families, and the costs incurred are on a sliding scale depending on the individuals’ situation in life. There is also a Samaritans fund for families on low incomes.
A physiotherapy class is observed with staff using a swimming pool to aid the recovery of their patients. A boy with a broken leg chats to a nurse. The telephone exchange is manned by women and a red phone warning of an emergency, a ‘crash call’ on 222 is taken by a nurse. Staff attend the reconstructed medical emergency notified by the exchange, an apparent cardiac arrest on a stair case of the hospital.
The film ends with a an inter-title over various hospital scenes with the words ‘Respond to the Appeal, Make a Generous Donation, Help Your Hospital Now.’
