A Record of a Street Party (reel 1)
Super 8mm film Colour Mute 1977 20:59
Summary: First part of a two part amateur film of celebrations in Walthamstow for the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.
Title number: 820
LSA ID: LSA/1090
Description: A man sits in an armchair in a front room and reads an introduction to the film, smoking a cigarette with one hand while holding a small microphone in the other (there is no sound on the film). A number of other adults in the front room are then filmed reading from a typed sheet of paper. A title of the Union flag introduces the next section recording an Easter fair at The Elms Sports Ground. A group of adults and children push and pull some wheeled market stalls out on to the Douglas Eyre playing fields at the Elms. Later at the same place, people visit the fair and stalls for the 'Spot the Poster Mistake', a raffle, (prizes a bottle of sherry, a bottle of Johnnie Walker whisky, a bottle of Gordon's gin or a stuffed toy of Uncle Bulgaria from the Wombles), film shows, fairy cake vendors, and a find the key game. There are also entertainments in the form of wet sponge throwing at a person in some stocks, competition darts, a 'Guess the Doll's Name' game, a rummage sale, bingo, and a book sale. Another title introduces a section showing a street being decorated for the jubilee party. Men on ladders secure bunting across the road from terrace to terrace. Next up is the York Road competition of 5 a side football at the Elms Sports ground. A man interviews boys playing in the teams using a hand held microphone and portable tape recorder. Some boys practice penalty kicks into a goal before the matches begin in earnest. The victors (a team from Chester Road) are subsequently interviewed by the man with the tape recorder and prizes are awarded to the players. The film concludes with footage of preparations for the Chester Road Silver Jubilee street party. The street has a series of strings of bunting reaching across the road from row of houses to row of houses and some houses are individually decorated with flags, bunting, balloons and royal memorabilia. A scaffolded stage has been set up in the street. A brief nightime shot shows coloured lights across the street.
