She was named after her keepers Bruce and Sam and as the first baby polar bear to be successfully reared in Britain, was an immediate attraction with the public. In 1950, she helped attract three million people to London Zoo, still the highest figure ever on record. Brumas, who was mistakenly reported as a male at the time, was a star of books, postcards, toys and other souvenirs.
