Title number: 814
LSA ID: LSA/1084
Description: A record of when the River Lea burst its banks in 1953, inundating streets in Leyton with water. The film is taken around the Lea Bridge Road in the area of Warner housing before the rise up past the Markhouse Road junction. The floodwater has overcome the street drainage system and spills upwards from grates in the road. The local population make the best of the situation however and persevere with journeys through the floods. Cars, delivery vehicles and buses drive on through the water and a few cyclists take their chances too. Barrows and trolleys are used to good effect transporting heavy loads drily, while an infant in a pram has to be a carried by two people and a father gives his son a piggy back. Some adults go barefoot, while a few protect their legs with wellington boots. Some children on their way to school go shoeless, roll up their trousers and skirts and walk through. A branch of Westcott's Laundry is visible in one shot.
