Boys Brigade Summer Camp, Bawtree No. 5
16mm film Colour Silent c.1949 8:01
Summary: A film of a Boys' Brigade summer camping trip.
Title number: 695
LSA ID: LSA/904
Description: The film begins with a shot of a sign reading 'The Boys Brigade - Mid Surrey - Camp'. There are shots of the Brigade boys making their way to the camp. Beginning on a country lane with cottages filmed from the back of an open truck, a group of adults on the lane wave goodbye to the boys, who wave back from inside the truck. There are more shots from the rear of the truck as it drives through a village with other cars passing on the road. At the campsite, there are shots of tents, boys sat around on blankets on ground playing cards, and adults sat in chairs. A chef in his white uniform presents a platter of unappetising looking salad at the entrance to a tent. A Boys' Brigade leader instructs the chef while sat outside his bell tent. There are shots of band practice and a religious service, where a Boys 'Brigade leader gives a sermon behind an altar set up inside a tent. There are more general views of the campsite including bell tents and ridge tents with boys sat outside on the grass. A young boy blows a bugle summoning other boys with their plates and cutlery to queue for food, which is served from two black buckets. One boy is seen holding a bowl of the food, which looks like meat and dumplings in gravy. A group of the boys eat at tables inside a mess tent. The film concludes with a trip to the beach where boys play football on the sand and go swimming in the sea. An apparently unrelated piece of film of a group of girls playing rounders appears at the end (perhaps members of the Girls' Brigade).
