Erith Town
Standard 8mm film Colour Silent c.1969 7:58
Summary: Amateur film of the town of Erith.
Title number: 59
LSA ID: LSA/66
Description: The film begins with views of demolition around the traditional town centre as part of urban redevelopment in Erith. The sites of destruction and part standing walls on old terraced streets are contrasted with the new tower blocks being constructed above them and the concrete modernity of the new shopping centre being built. Down by the riverside, there's a look across the Thames to Purfleet and more scenes of destruction as men demolish a factory building with sledgehammers. The film ends however with more peaceful shots, showing the Parish Church of St Paulinus on Church Hill an ancient survivor in the wake of the wave of modernity destroying the old town.
