Local Lore: Just around the Corner - Around & About Bexley
Standard 8mm film Colour Silent c.1977 35:04
Summary: Amateur film shot around Bexley.
Title number: 57
LSA ID: LSA/64
Description: It begins with cows grazing in fields near the town, and gorse in flower near a new housing estate. Views from a tree dotted hillside precede views about the grounds of the Tudor mansion house, Hall Place with views of the house's exterior, its formal gardens, topiary and the controlled route of the River Cray across the property. The first spring flowers are out but the trees retain their winter starkness and are devoid of leaves. Next the film records some of the residential streets of Bexley, taking in some of its larger houses. A walk through Joyden's Wood in Spring reveals dappled sunlight on the forest floor. The green walkway beside the River Cray provides a play area for some young children, while Danson Park provides entertainment for older residents with opportunities for golf, bowling and meanders through the gardens of Danson House. Some people take a row out on the lake, while other enjoy the wildlife. A sequence of shots around Bexley High Street includes views of shops, the parish church of St Mary the Virgin, the Railway Tavern, the King's Head, Miller's Arms and The George public houses. Then its on to the Old Bexley Riding School where some children are being led on horses, a man is scything nettles, horses and foals eat grass, and older children set out riding on a bridleway. At Joyden's Wood, there are shots of children playing, adults walking, a rhododendron flowering on the verge, young pine trees and a flush of bluebells.
