Summary: A film about Syon House, Middlesex
Title number: 427
LSA ID: LSA/559
Description: A documentary on the famous house on the western outskirts of London. Its peaceful manner is contrasted with nearby Brentford docks and the buses passing by its gates to Hammersmith and the West End. The film moves under the Percy Lion on Syon Park's gates and into its grounds with the gardens by Capability Brown, its glasshouses, specimen trees and gnomic obelisk. In Syon House itself the story of the area prior to the ownership of the Dukes of Northumberland is told. A history moving from its monastic past to tragic fate of previous occupants of the house (an inordinate number of which appear to have been executed). Inside the house the camera lingers over its artworks including paintings, statue, chandeliers and wall hangings. The commentary describes the Robert Adam interior, through the elements in a 'Roman' style to the 18th century dining hall and the Tudor gallery taking in the details of furniture, carpets, false bookcases, a musical birdcage and clock and the elaborate floors and ceilings.
Credits: Commentary: MacDonald Hobley
