ARP Film
16mm film Black & White Silent c.1940 16:09
Summary: Film about Air Raid Precautions (ARP) during World War II.
Title number: 420
LSA ID: LSA/551
Description: An ARP recruitment poster introduces the film, followed by an exterior view of the 'MBSN Air Raid Precautions School'. Some interested parties enter the school and attend a demonstration on the flat roof of a building. A man in a suit guides them through the correct assembly, wearing and cleaning of a respirator (gas mask). A section follows on the construction of makeshift shelters inside a domestic house, using blankets and under stairs cupboards and how cellophane can make windows safer from bomb damage. Next follows an instructional section on dealing with an incendiary bomb, using sand and water to extinguish it. Then some men in protective uniforms demonstrate the process of dealing with chemical weapons. In a back garden, two men dig out a lawn to make the underground section of a bomb shelter (pausing only for tea, bread and butter and an apple). One of the men's young daughter climbs into the hole created and uses tools to help remove more soil. The hole complete, pre shaped concrete sections are placed inside forming part of the roof and wall structure, with breeze blocks being mortared in to provide the other walls. Soil is then backfilled over the structure, with a brick walled section providing an access route.
Further information: A sign on the ARP school point enquirers to Stoke Newington Town Hall on Church Street and it is unclear whether this film takes place in Hounslow or Stoke Newington.
