Annual Sports Day Organised by Platt's Stores, Electric Empire, Hounslow
35mm nitrate film Black & White Silent 26.06.1912 5:29
Summary: The Fifth Annual Sports Day of Platt's Stores' Athletics Club was held on Wednesday 26 June 1912 at Teale's Field in Bath Road, Hounslow (now the site of Clipstone Road and parts of Bulstrode Road/Bulstrode Avenue). The sports day included walking and running races, the long jump, and 'tilting the bucket', which involved a wheelbarrow, a long pole, and a bucket of water (and the consequent drenching of unsuccessful competitors). The spectators in their best clothes are seen strolling and taking tea. The best dressed man is likely to be Mr Platt. One little boy is fascinated by the camera. In the background, trains from the Metropolitan and District Railway's Hounslow Branch Line are seen passing along the embankment to Hounslow Barracks terminus station (now Hounslow West Station on the Piccadilly Line).

Further information: An account of the sports day with lists of competitors and prizes awarded is in the Middlesex Chronicle (Hounslow) for 29 June 1912. In the weeks after the event, this film was shown at the Electric Empire cinema on High Street, Hounslow. The Electric Empire was Hounslow's first cinema and opened in the public hall/theatre room of the old Town Hall. The old Town Hall, built in 1858, was made redundant in 1905 when the new Town Hall was built on Treaty Road. Therefore, after 1905, its public function facilities were let to theatrical and cinema promoters. The cinema there was known as the Empire until it closed in the mid-1950s.
