Description: This documentary introduces the viewer to some of the techniques and processes used in the steam bending of wood. Many of the applications of steam bent timber are shown including its use in furniture, boat building, tool manufacture, barrels, sporting equipment (including tennis rackets), caravan structure and in motor car body manufacture. A section of the film discusses the relative properties of different kinds of tree and their appropriateness for use in steam bending. The technique of laminated bending is introduced and its use in aeroplane manufacture is discussed. Beer barrels are seen in use at the Whitbread Brewery in the City of London, and a truck carrying them leaves the brewery on Chiswell Street, with Beech Street visible in the background. The film concludes with footage of the Forest Products Research Laboratory at Princes Risborough.
