Summary: An amateur video compiling events in Merton's libraries.
Title number: 3512

Description: The video includes three stories from the recent history of Merton's library service. The first item records the moving day of Merton Library as it changes location. Shots of the exterior of the old Merton Library include removal men from the Burton & Smith company shifting shelves and crates into a large removals truck. Inside the library, the building is seen to be partly cleared, with crates and cardboard boxes of books everywhere and empty shelves lining the walls. A few members of library staff are seen moving amongst the boxes. These shots are followed by views of Crown House in central Morden, with construction work continuing outside. Removal men are pushing full crates inside and removing empties. Inside the new library, some books are already on the shelves, but much of the furniture remains covered with protective plastic. Some boxes of books are being opened but yet more remain as yet untouched. Members of library staff are filmed moving about the space, and shelves are stacked with more books. At desks some new computer equipment is filmed being used. The second item is shot a year on from the library move and show a busy fully functioning library. Books are being issued to the public, and many members of the public can be seen browsing the shelves and using the desks. The camera takes in views around the library, including a central sculpture, newspaper and magazine area, the children's library, the enquiries desk, a microfiche machine, several study areas, the record library, and an area for musical scores. The third item was filmed on Saturday 17th October 1992 at Mitcham Library on London Road. It records a Diwali celebration hosted by the Merton Asian Women's Association. The public event is held before guests including, the Mayor of Merton, Councillor Blake, the Mayoress and Judges of the Library Association Holt Jackson Community Initiative Award. There are music and dance performances by adults and children, poetry reading, explanations of the festival of Diwali, and comment from the community librarian. Many of the women participating in the vent wear saris and traditional Indo-Asian dress. Display boards about the library walls provide words and images presenting Asian life and culture, while tables bear traditional Asian foods, which are consumed after the formal presentations.
