Title number: 3401
LSA ID: LSA/4457
Description: A record of the official opening ceremony for the new herb garden at Valence House Garden. Mr Hill, the librarian for Barking & Dagenham talks about the kitchen garden that used to exists on the site of the new herb garden and about the recent restoration of Valence House and its gardens. The Friends of Valence House and the local branch of Soroptimists International are thanked for the financial contribution they have made to the development of the garden and the provision of two benches. A ribbon on a bench is cut marking its official availability for sitting upon. Cream teas are served in the house and taken outside in the garden. The camera records the flowers and plants of the garden and the old people who are guests at the event. Inside Valence House, the video captures some of the artworks, maps, models and displays in the museum. Later in the day some Morris dancers perform traditional dances with sticks and handkerchiefs, a craft fair is set up inside the house and outside people put their hand to hammering armour. A woman dressed as the Queen and waving a Union flag sings 'God Save the Queen' as she walks around the garden.
Further information: The video features intermittent commentary from the videomaker, some apparently intended for the viewer, other apparently not. What is being said is not always discernible.
