Description: Barking & Dagenham Council uses the story of a newly graduated teaching student called Sue to illustrate the benefits of employment within the Borough. The video consists entirely of still photographs with a voiceover as Sue describes graduating and deciding where to seek employment. She is attracted to Barking & Dagenham by the recruitment literature they have produced and attends an interview at one of the Borough's schools. She is impressed by the friendly and thorough interview, so responds positively to their offer of employment. She is pleased to discover that there is good provision of teacher's accommodation in Barking and Dagenham in halls of residence, which are cheap to live in. She describes her furnished and spacious private room and the shared facilities including a well appointed kitchen and laundry. While her initial impressions of the area supported pre-conceived ideas about industrial east London, she also notices the parks, open spaces and friendly streets that counter prejudices about the grime of inner city life. On her first day at school, she meets an amiable team, is appointed a mentor and meets Peter a young teacher who has just completed his first year at the school. Peter takes over the narration awhile and talks about the Borough's well resourced schools and the promotion opportunities available if you work hard. Sue continues the narration speaking about leisure and recreation from her summer holidays visiting Essex, local shopping opportunities, the ready social life in the halls of residence and the easy proximity to central London and all it has to offer.
