Summary: The history of St Margaret's Church in Barking from its origins in the 11th Century, through its relations with Barking Abbey and on after the Abbey's dissolution.

Description: The architecture of the main church and the Curfew Tower are discussed with reference to how the buildings have been changed and adapted over time. The churches internal decorations and commemorative plaques are presented and there is film of the stained glass windows that celebrate the fishermen who once sailed from Barking. The church's contemporary activities are also covered with footage of a charity auction, a mystery coach tour for parishioners, the Parish picnic, and a craft fair. There's film of worship inside the church including preparations for the communion service, advent and Christmas services and Remembrance Sunday. Baptism and confirmation ceremonies are recorded at St Margaret's Church and at Christ Church. A modern wedding ceremony introduced the fact that Captain Cook was married at the Church. St Margaret's choir master John Cox is shown conducting choir practice, and the bell ringers are shown in action practicing within the church tower led by Anne Hinchcliffe. St Margaret's Church shares its ministry with Christ Church on the Thames View Estate and St Patrick's Church on the Blake Avenue Estate which are both also filmed. A musical evening staged by the three churches is recorded at Eastbury House. St Margaret's Centre is shown being opened by the Bishop of Chelmsford and the Leader of Barking and Dagenham Council. St Margaret's Church Of England School also features with views of an assembly and classroom activity. The outreach work of the church on the Gascoine Estate through its advice shop and visits by lay workers continues its efforts to assist the poor. The video ends with a consideration of the new millennium and how the Church can continue its work into the future.
