Summary: Programme about the changing face of industry in Southwark and the council's redevelopment plans for the borough. Features interviews with members of the planning team at Southwark Council, and members of the North Southwark Community Development Group, a local pressure group protesting some of the new riverside development plans. Ends with a studio discussion between the two groups, with councillors addressing some of their concerns and the conflicts between private ownership and development and working class communities and job concerns.

Boat speeds down Thames past barges. Lorry with metal barrels pulls up outside entrance to Borough Market. Traders wheel products on carts and carry them in crates. “The market is still active but there is less happening by the river side” [03:28] (death of the river front trade, shipping, empty warehouses). Southwark Cathedral GVs, and organ music. Walkways above the street between warehouse buildings. Southwark Town Hall, to find out about council's redevelopment plans for the borough. Spoke to Alderman Sawyer, chairman of the housing committee. [05:47] Talks about strategy planning, housing – planning department. Baths Assembly Hall, Southwark Thams-side exhibition (various photographs on display). [06:30] Councillor Halford re: planning approval/refusal, and developers. Ted Bowman, North Southwark Community Development Group – local protest group. Talks about pubs decreasing, change of use, prices going up. Meeting at headquarters Marshalsea Road. [09:00] tenants association. Talking heads of local people at group, difficulties getting council houses, living in slums. Group discusses new Strategy Plan from developers/council, and new office space. [14:00] Ageing population, rises in costs of housing. Local woman talks about LCC and housing issues. [16:00] North Southwark Community Development Group meet the councillors in studio discussion for the programme. Councillor discusses private ownership, and individuals' rights, and conflict with tenants and local communities. GV of Hays Wharf, Willson Whare, riverside buildings – warehouse sites now gone, but are in private ownership. Ted Bowman gives the working class viewpoint – if hotels, offices etc spring up along the riverfront, “very nice”, prices go up and affect local working class population.
