Chapel of Ease, Bexleyheath
16mm film Black & White Silent 1926 4:32
Summary: Amateur film of the demolition of a church steeple, Bexleyheath.
Title number: 31
LSA ID: LSA/36
Description: This film of a church building being dissembled begins with the spire of a church being removed from its steeple by a rope. Men stand around the building, one holding a large metal cockerel (possibly the spire piece). Men high up inside the steeple wave to the camera down below (by this shot some of the steeple tiles have been removed). There follows some views from the steeple of rows of houses and countryside just beyond and from steeple towards the centre of town. Returning to the demolition, there are shots of men working on the steeple and more of the roof tiles removed. There is a shot of the steeple with all the tiles removed and the wooden rafters exposed followed by a sequence of shots as the rafters themselves are removed, fewer appearing in each shot until all are gone. The workmen are filmed standing on the flat roof of the tower remaining and then working on the tower itself taking down the brick walls.
Further information: Newspaper article in the Bexleyheath Observer 6 August 1926, page 7 column B. Two local men Mr H Covil, and Mr A J Miles helped remove the bell.
