Title number: 3029

Description: An introduction to the Digilink telephone switchboard service offered by GEC Reliance. The Digilink service combines telecommunications and micro processing to allow more sophisticated control and monitoring of a company's telephony services. The advantages of the system are illustrated through two fictional scenarios performed by actors and via three actual stories from users of the service. In the first fictional story company boss John Jordan, secretary Jane Parsons, and Barbara Bank a switchboard operator battle against Murphy's Law, where lavatory visits cause important calls to be missed before Digilink is introduced. Digilink also creates new opportunities for John Jordan to monitor his staff's telephone use. In the second fictional scenario, Debbie a switchboard operator at the Wellmet hotel uses Digilink to recognise which guest is calling, to automate wake up calls and to create itemised phone bills for guests. The two fictional stories are accompanied by comment from real users: Eileen, the telephonist at removal company Bishops Move, Carl the telephonist at the Reform Club on Pall Mall, and from Steven Cornell who runs several travel companies.
