Summary: Documentary on the history of Yiddish theatre in London.
Title number: 2963
LSA ID: LSA/3893
Description: A century of Jewish culture in London is explored through its distinct theatrical traditions. An interview with the performer Anna Tzelniker gives a personal take on the rise and fall of Yiddish theatre and she discusses her career and the story of the wartime drama 'The King of Lampedusa'. The development of Yiddish arts is also discussed by the artist Stan Brustein, Esther Brustein, the historian David Mazower, the musical director Phil Bernstein, and Ena Abrahams. The video features extracts from Yiddish performances of Shakespeare's 'The Merchant of Venice', 'Dem Zeidn's Meissele' (The Grandfather's Story) and Yiddish music by Anna Tzelniker, Harry Ariel and Bernard Mendelovitch the last three remaining Yiddish actors in the UK. The interviews and recollections are supported by archive film and photographs that capture a lost world of east end Jewish theatres like the Adler Hall, the Grand Palais, and the Temple.
