Summary: A collection of interviews by and of the members of the Side Door unemployment drop-in club.
Title number: 2938
LSA ID: LSA/3864
Description: A number of young men and women are recorded talking about their lives. They speak about their experiences of unemployment and poverty. These experiences are related to a range of other issues that affect them ranging across depression, misuse of drugs, problems with the police, family difficulties and sexual abuse. One young woman is keen to express her distaste for the YTS (Youth Training Scheme) programme that the unemployed are being drawn into. Margaret Thatcher comes in for some abuse, and the 'enterprise and war' culture of the Conservative government is challenged. The recordings are made in different settings within the building used by the drop-in club. Some of the participants identities are hidden using black screens or recording them speaking while out of shot.
