Description: This compilation of three films forms part of a longer series exploring the length of London's River Thames from its source to its mouth. The three parts (parts 7, 8 and 9) here cover the area from the Upper Docks to the Thames Estuary. The film takes in a number of significant locations along the route including Tower Bridge, the redeveloped St Katherine's Docks, the dilapidated docks at Wapping, West India Docks, the Greenwich foot tunnel under the river, the Cutty Sark, the Thames Barrier at Woolwich (under construction at the time), the Dartford tunnel for vehicles, Tilbury Dock and Gravesend Ferry. The presenter meets the river police, a tug captain and travels on a police launch, a Thames tugboat, a container lorry and the container ship 'Encounter Bay'. Along the way the films bring out five themes: how the river changes physically from its source to its mouth; how the uses of the river have changed and continue to change; how the uses of the river relate to its physical nature at different points along its course; how the river affects peoples live, and how people affect the river; and how conflicts continue to arise between the differing uses people want to make of the river.
