Summary: An amateur video recording of Mystery Plays performed at St Stephens Church, East Twickenham, at Easter.
Title number: 2809
LSA ID: LSA/3680
Description: The video includes music and acting from the performance of a Medieval mystery play. The costumed actors use the entire space of St Stephens Church, in East Twickenham as a stage for their performance, while the audience sit in the middle of the action. The play concerns the boundary decision determining the parishes of Twickenham and Isleworth after an official claims the line divides St Stephen's in two. The story explores the basis of conflict and its resolution. A following drama faces Jesus Christ off against Satan during the temptation in the desert, in order to further highlight the sins of avarice, pride and gluttony evident in the first play. The actors then play scenes presenting Jesus at the tomb of Lazarus where he preaches and performs miracles, throwing the money lenders from the temple, taking the last supper, facing trial and being crucified. The plays are concluded with a call to the audience to join the next day's church service, music dancing and the players joining the audience.
