Summary: An amateur video recording the Centenary Street Party in Haverfield Gardens, Kew.
Title number: 2808
LSA ID: LSA/3679
Description: The video begins with party preparations, the street being decorated with bunting and balloons, the road closed sign being put out, and the cake readied. Some of the street's residents start to appear, laying out tables and chairs. Children in fancy dress play 'pass the parcel' and a game with music and balloons. A drop of rain causes some umbrellas to come out briefly, but sunshine quickly draws out more people. A display board features the history of Haverfield Gardens and is read by different people throughout the day. Musical entertainment is provided by a jazz band, while the residents sit down at long tables to eat. The centenary party cake is taken out and the film maker moves around to interview the residents about the event, the street, and their upcoming medical procedures. Some people get up to dance to the jazz band before a speech is given by the street's longest resident giving thanks to the events organisers, she then cuts the cake and leads a toast. As the evening draws in, candles are lit in front gardens and fairy lights across the street are turned on. The video ends with the jazz band playing on into the night and people continuing to dance.
