Margery Withers, a Twickenham resident and the former secretary to King Manuel is interviewed about life within the Portuguese court in exile. Father George Tancred talks about the King's religious beliefs. Professor Sousa Rebelo of Kings College talks about the political situation in Portugal that led to the King's exile and the plan to restore the monarchy. Archival film and photographs and illustrations are used to visualise much of the story told. The documentary visits the office of Maggs Brothers, (booksellers taken on by King Manuel), the Catholic Church of St James in Twickenham where he worshipped and Twickenham Library.
