Description: Houses of Parliament, St Stephen's Tower (with scaffolding up most of its height), Westminster Bridge shot from south bank of river. Westminster Pier shot from Westminster Bridge and from the embankment - Queen Boadicea II boat. Film from the boat leaving Westminster Pier, travelling by the Tower of London, dockside cranes, piers (one marked 'Fortes'), a boat styled as a Mississippi paddle steamer, a boat being loaded by crane, men rowing, a tug pulling lighters, the more rural Thames approaching Richmond. The boat moors at Richmond Landing Stage and passengers disembark. A woman feeds ducks, swans and pigeons by Richmond Bridge. Some young men steady rowboats for hire. FILM 2: 'A River Trip Spring 1948' - Views from a rowboat on the riverside Thames about Richmond. The local flora and fauna visible from the water come in for a lot of attention. Other vessels are filmed passing on the river and we get occasional shots of a suited man providing the rowing. The trip involves a saunter upriver from Richmond, around Teddington before travelling back downriver again. FILM 3: More views of river traffic, this time shots from the land and bridges of steamers and sail boats making passage. It's a glorious Summer's day and many people are enjoying the water. FILM 4 - records walkers promenading beside the river at Richmond, dressed in winter coats. A young girl throws bread to the swans in the river. FILM 5: Shows men rowing racing boats under the railway bridge, while others practice rowing more sedately. FILM 6: leisure craft on the river - a motorboat called 'Mara' , a man punting passengers, a steam launch carrying people. FILM 7: Views of Battersea power station behind Chelsea bridge and shots of two teams of rowers racing watched by riverside crowds (possibly the Oxford and Cambridge University Boat Race). FILM 8: a competition rowing race on the river filmed from different angles, including views close to the water from another boat. More views from a small boat with an external motor record larger boats passing, one called 'Connaught' FILM 9: Her Majesty's Yacht Britannia and HMS Birmingham filmed passing a town (Portsmouth) and some small yachts including 'Timbatica' and 'Blue Cascade'. This is followed by film of the British Naval fleet and NATO colleagues at sea including an aircraft carrier (possibly Ark Royal), submarines and radar ships, the destroyers HMS Fife and HMS Kent, HMS Sheffield, the frigate HMS Tartar, the HNLMS Tromp of the Netherlands Navy, and a Turkish navy vessel.
Further information: A compilation of items shot from the late 1940s through into the early 1980s. A curious assemblage of items, some of which are lost without further context. Only the presence of the River Thames provides any continuity between them all.
