Description: The first item on the tape is 'A Film About Skating' which is a record of artistic and sporting ice skating. It begins with film of individual men and women figure skaters performing routines while lit up by spotlights during the 'Carnival at Queens'. This is followed by film of the ice skating world championship showing various contestants on the ice rink before a large audience. The events shown include ice dancing and leaping over obstacles on the ice. Some contestants are seen being marked with score cards and there is an award of trophies to the championship's winners. A piece of slow motion of film of skater Hans Gerschwiler is introduced as a study in technique. Gerschwiler leaps and spins while skating both forwards and backwards. Arnold Gerschwiler practicing ice dancing with a woman on a frozen lake surrounded by trees and a couple of houses. More film of skaters Hans Gerschwiler and Daphne Walker shot in 1946 shows them practising techniques in the empty Richmond ice rink. Women skaters in sparkling costumes practice ice dancing routine and are photographed. Film of women skating on outdoor rink in Europe including performing formation dance routines. Some film at Davos in Switzerland records male racing skaters and women ice dancing. A new item records a match of polo from the audience stand. The riders are slightly obscured by the heads of other spectators. Another item films teams of rowers on the River Thames competing and practicing. A subsequent item 'Our councillors on the green' records a cricket match and children playing on Richmond Green (with Richmond Theatre visible in the background of some shots). Another item 'A Walk Around Kew Gardens' records various features of the Royal Botanic Gardens in springtime, including the gates on Kew Road, the admission notice boards, formal floral beds, the tropical glass house, the lake, woodland areas. The springtime scenes are followed by others from late winter with daffodils and magnolia blossom set against bare deciduous trees. The garden is also filmed in Summer with scenes taking in views of the temperate glass houses and the pagoda.
