Description: The Vikings Invade Richmond' was shot on the August Bank Holiday of 1949 and consists of a series of riverside scenes. People line the Twickenham Road bridge and the riverside path along Ducks Walk to watch a replica Viking Long ship be rowed down the River Thames. Men dressed as Vikings stand above the rowers and wave at the crowds. The Long ship is pursued by a pair of canoeists in kayaks and there are many other boats on the water. The Danish flag is filmed flying over Richmond, as a record of the 'invasion'.
Further information: The replica Viking long ship in the film is 'Hugin', a copy of the Gokstad ship, a Viking ship excavated in 1880 at Gokstad farm in Vestfold, Norway. It was sailed from Denmark to Broadstairs in Kent in July 1949 to commemorate the 1500th arrival of Hengist and Horsa, two Saxon chieftains, who landed at nearby Ebbsfleet. In August the ship was taken up the Thames from Greenwich to Richmond before making a return journey to the King George V Docks in east London (the journey seen in this film). The ship was apparently purchased by the Daily Mail newspaper and sent on a tour of UK seaside resorts, travelling by road with a write up in the paper every day by reporter F.G. Prince-White. The ship is now on display in Pegwell Bay in Kent.
