Description: A looped video recording the closure of High Road to traffic on January 19th 1987. Some of the roads last hours as a highway are shown, with the shopping street already closed to most traffic and still draped in Christmas lights. The Mayoral car arrives at Redbridge Town Hall followed by a procession including a vintage van for Charringtons Brewery, and a horse drawn stagecoach advertising Norwich Union. The Mayor of Redbridge descends the steps from the Town Hall followed by the Town Clerk and other officials, before he boards the stagecoach. The small procession passes the Kenneth More Theatre and Barclays Bank and rides on to the High Road where a highwayman intercepts them. The Mayor descends from the stagecoach and raises a glass of champagne amongst crowds on the road. The Mayor, mace bearer and Town Clerk then stand for photographs behind a ribbon across the road. The road is officially closed to traffic and the Mayor steps through the ribbon. A speech to the crowds by the Leader of the Borough council thanks the local traders for their involvement in the pedestrianisation programme as well as the staff of the planning department and town centre consultancy body. The Mayor officially opens the High Road to pedestrians with another speech that extols the virtues of Redbridge and Ilford, and speaks of the planned town centre redevelopment. The Traders Association then presents a silver salver to the Mayor and the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers band play 'Congratulations' as they march down the High Road. During the day of celebrations there are scenes of street theatre, a performance by members of the Redbridge Music School, a Punch & Judy show, a Morris dance performance, a steam organ, and a fire eating display.
