Description: Nineteen teenagers from the London Borough of Redbridge take part in a young people's commission as part of the area's engagement with Local democracy Week. The video is filmed in the council chamber and associated rooms within Redbridge Town Hall, as the young people participate in workshop and listen to invited speakers on the topic of how the council works and the process of British democracy. Throughout there are comments from the participants as well as Neil Shaw of Redbridge Strategic Services, Roger Hampton, Chief Executive of Redbridge Council, Clarissa White of the National Social Research Institute, representatives of the Thanet Youth Council, Ashok Viswanathan of Operation Black Vote, Ruby Dixon of the Improvement and Development Agency, Mike Gapes MP, Linda Perham MP, Nicola Hall of the Hansard Society, staff of the London Borough of Lewisham Youth Services, and members of Lewisham youth organisations. They young people also meet Nick Raynsford MP, the Minister for Local Government and the Regions. The teenagers get to express some of the issues that are important to young people in the Borough, what they think about the future, what they think about the council, and suggest how to encourage more young people to vote, and ways that the council improve its consultation with young people. At the end of the commission the participants give their verdict and summing up before some Redbridge councillors. The issues they highlight for action area: the creation of a youth council, to increase the availability of leisure activities, to bring down cost of public transport, to introduce ongoing interaction and consultation with young people, and to improve awareness of young people's rights. They receive responses from Councillor Javed, Leader of the Labour Group, Councillor Axon, Leader of the Conservative Group, Councillor Hoskins, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group, and Councillor Fairley-Churchill, Leader of the Independent Group.
