Description: An overview of the history of the Hospital Chapel of St Mary & St Thomas of Canterbury in Ilford, from its founding in the 12th Century through to its 850th anniversary in 1995. The video depends heavily on old maps, paintings and illustrations to cover the centuries before photography and cinema, although some modern photography of old buildings still evident provides coverage of Barking Abbey and the Chapel today. The artworks and windows of the Chapel are explained and their provenance, where known, is expressed. The Chapel's use in the modern era are recorded with views of Father Donald May leading a Eucharist service, and some of the other activities that go on there, including a guided tour led by Peter Wright of the Friends of the Hospital Chapel, church exhibitions, open days, flower displays, talks, and coffee mornings. The anniversary of the Chapel is shown being celebrated on Sunday 18th June 1995 with a civic thanksgiving service led by Donald May and attended by the Bishop of Chelmsford, John Way, the Mayor and Mayoress of Redbridge and other dignitaries.
