Summary: Activist campaign video about the A12 Hackney to M11 link road.
Title number: 2688
LSA ID: LSA/3587
Description: The inside story of the 'No M11 Campaign' following 15 months of direct action between 1993 and 1995 against the controversial road building programme for the M11 Link Road (A12) from Wanstead to Hackney Wick. The video itself is a participatory piece of activism and combines material edited from 200 hours shot on the front-line of the campaign with personal testimony from many of the protestors who took part. Amongst the incidents given particular attention is the battle to save Wanstead's George Green under which the M11 Link Road would tunnel and the 250 year old Sweet Chestnut tree that would be killed in the process, including the ousting of protestors from the tree in December 1993 and the trees destruction. The video also covers the rooftop protests at Westminster and the home of John McGregor, the Transport Secretary to highlight the plight of Wanstead residents. Much of the action concentrates on the Claremont Road, where protestors occupied houses seized by compulsory purchase orders in order to be demolished for the road route. The protestors' definition of themselves as the 'Independent Free Area of Wanstonia' provides a counter to the moves of established power, resisting both the government's road expansion plans and the legislation for a Criminal Justice Act. Music by Zion Train, The Clash, The Levellers.
