Description: Hounslow's CentreSpace, a one-stop leisure and information spot for the Borough continues a tradition of public provision. The video begins with a history of Hounslow using archival photographs to illustrate the development of the area over the last few centuries. The story told leads to 1905 and the opening of the first public library. By the 1970s there was a recognition that facilities were no longer completely fit for purpose and plans for a move began. Video footage shows the temporary accommodation in School Road that Hounslow District Library moved to early in 1985. In March of that year a site was cleared on Treaty Road and construction began on the new Treaty Centre including 'CentreSpace', a new home for public library and leisure provision. In September 1987 the Treaty Centre shopping mall is opened by the comedians Little and Large. In September 1988 the video records the Library moving into its new space. A civic event is held to celebrate the opening of the new library, with people in fancy dress and a jazz band. A group of 500 schoolchildren from Alexandra, Grove Road and Hounslow Tower Schools were brought into the celebrations. They form a chain passing books hand to hand along the High Street from the old Library to the new. At the library entrance inside the Treaty Centre a couple of schoolchildren present celebrity musician Joe Brown and David Wexford, the Leader of the Council with the final books. Crowds of adults and children with balloons look on to the events from the shopping mall's balconied atrium. Before the press and public, Joe Brown declares the Library officially open and cuts the ceremonial ribbon. Inside he attempts to issue a book, while library readers begin to explore the shelves and boys and girls use the children's library. At the Paul Robeson Theatre Joe Brown and local politicians are swamped by a crowd of balloon wielding children. In May 1991 a tourist information office also opens in the centre, announced by a town crier. The new tourist office uses a highwayman theme, and outside the Treaty Centre a horse borne bandit waylays a stagecoach, with all participants in 18th Century costume. Inside the Treaty Centre Mayor Jaffa cuts a ribbon and announces the centre officially open and joins a buffet lunch at the Paul Robeson Theatre. The versatility of the Paul Robeson Theatre is demonstrated with film of an audience watching an evening musical and dance performance at the Theatre, and with footage of the rack seating put away allowing a children's daytime event. The video concludes with a quick overview of Library facilities concentrating on how customer services issue library cards, and entertainments at the 'Little Top' in the children's library.
