Description: A film record of an inspection of Bexley's civil defence services by the local MP Mrs Jennie Anderson, and two air raid precaution exercises in the August of 1940. It begins with a civil defence practice exercise at East Wickham House, where a large fire has been set alight and the civil defence officer uses water hoses to put out the flames. Some local residents view the proceedings from a safe distance. When the fire has been put out some men climb into the upper parts of the building using a ladder and practice removing injured people using ropes and an A frame. They lower a stretcher from the roof containing a mannequin with a paper mache head. The stretcher is carried to an ambulance trailer attached to a civilian car on a nearby street and loaded into the rear. The trailer door is closed and the car drives away. A second exercise involves a 'public shelter test' in Welling town centre. A flare is set alight in the middle of the street and civilians are directed into an ARP Shelter. Empty prams, bicycles and working bikes are left abandoned on the street and then retrieved as the civilians are given the all clear to leave the shelter. There follows footage of an inspection at the 'no.1 depot', where Mrs Anderson is escorted about the depot and inspects the staff and vehicles of the air raid precaution service before leaving by car. At the ARP warden's post no. 34, a hand written sign reads 'We are collecting your scrap iron and aluminium, leave it here'. Mrs Anderson is shown a lightly camouflaged tent and the small brick beside it forming the warden's post. The final sequence is shot in a parkland area (possibly Danson Park), where a large group of nurses, and men and women of the ARP stand in a row and are addressed by Mrs Anderson. They then proceed to march past both her and an assembled crowd, followed by ARP ambulances and vehicles for dealing with fire and rescue.
