Description: The ceremonial dedication of a new water fountain on Stoke Newington Common. Shot on Stoke Newington Common looking toward the junction of Benthal Road and Stoke Newington Common (road). The Mayor of Hackney Maurice Blitz officially opens the fountain dedicated to Florence du Vergier on 22nd April 1960. The dedication on the plaque reads: 'This corner of Stoke Newington Common has been laid out to commemorate the services rendered to the borough of Hackney, particularly in the spheres of housing and public health
by Mrs. Florence du Vergier J.P., Alderman and Councillor of the Borough from 1928-1953 and Mayor 1943-4.' The first people to have a drink from the new fountain were the siblings Tony and Annette Paul from nearby Garnham Street.
Further information: Florence du Vergier had been the first woman Mayor of Hackney and had lived on the adjacent Maury Road.
