Description: This 30-minute film is the first part of a project funded by Southwark Council Neighbourhood Fund 23/24. The aim of the project was to capture memories of the long-term residents of the Elephant and Castle area of South London during a period of rapid re-development.
In conversation with local writer and educator, Lynda Waterhouse, two neighbours Marian (95) and John (72) recount aspects of their lives and community going as far back as the 1920s.
As the stories and laughter flow, many fascinating details come to light, recalling different times and ways of life.
Photographs, many taken by Marian’s father, a keen amateur photographer, illustrate their stories.
This project is a reminder of the need to take time to note the everyday details of life before they are lost forever. It was filmed by Ludmilla Andrews over several months in 2024.
