Summary: Record of the destruction of tower blocks on the Clapton Park Estate.
Title number: 2230
LSA ID: LSA/2912
Description: A brief history of the Clapton Park estate (built between 1969 and 1971) and its problems forms a prologue to a record of events surrounding the destruction of the estates tower blocks. Through a process of tenant involvement the tower blocks are to be replaced by 180 new homes built by the Council in collaboration with Housing Associations. There is a record of the demolition of the buildings, from men with sledgehammers through to the detonation of the blocks with explosives. Some of the estates residents talk about the living conditions faced in the tower blocks and the actions taken to effect change. Those interviewed are Harry Clark (Chair of the Estate Development Committee); Angie (Clapton Park tenant); Maureen Doe (Estate Development Committee Secretary); and Barbara Brownlee (Comprehensive Estates Initiative Estate Co-ordinator). Some of the financial motivations of the Council are questioned and the importance of true tenant involvement and activism is stressed. The video was made by students on the 1997 Access to Media Production Course funded by the European Social Fund and the London Borough of Hackney Arts and Entertainment Department. The video itself was funded by the Comprehensive Estates Initiative (CEI) which was dedicated to tenant participation in Hackney.
