Description: Barrington Foster (unedited tape 62’30” May 05 for KNIFE project) at Camberwell Green talks to Chris Haydon about his early life in Camberwell getting into crime, and young boys 13-16 yrs old, guns and knives and drugs, family life and dads … Black British kids, no culture handed down from previous generations. 18 yrs 7 months in prison, went in when 19, failure of housing officer and probation officer when he came out, peer pressure. Barrington recounts his criminal CV, arrested Feb 1982, prison life, advice to young guys, working with Pupil Referral Units. 2 jobs with young people and they ran out of funding. Teachers have a tough job, parents have to realise, carrying a knife, bullying, fear, fashion, dangerous. It used to be fisticuffs, now they can’t get out of their cars, drive-by shootings. In 1981 it was machetes, baseball bats. Surround yourself with good people/bad people. 2 degrees, Sociology and Psychology.
