DVD Black & White Silent 1928 14:49
Summary: Public information film made by Bermondsey Borough Council's Health Department about sensible clothing choices for good health.
Title number: 21120
LSA ID: LSA/27739
Description: 'The animal baby arrives in the world fully dressed but baby is born without clothes'. Black and white footage of a nurse holding a naked baby. The film states that it is climate and fashion which dictate our choice of clothes. Footage of women and a girl dressed in clothes from the years 1560 and 1890. 3'06" 'These fashions defied the rules of health. They were tight and cumbersome, far too numerous and weighed too much. The 1560 dress weighed 14 pounds'.
3'20" The film states that present day fashions are much more sensible (shows an example) and says that clothes should allow 'unhampered' movement and 'free play' to sunshine and air' (footage of people in tennis whites).
3.54" 'Clothes should be light in weight and few in number'. Footage of a mother being able to quickly undress her child. The clothes are placed on scales to show they do not weigh much. The film says that winter clothing needs to be heavier but a child should still not be overloaded by it. Footage of the mother undressing her child in winter clothes with a nurse looking on. The child has many layers on and the footage says they weigh nearly 4 pounds, concluding the child carries more than 1000 pounds a year. There is an animation of a child carrying a cow on its back.
6'51" 'We wear dark clothes in the winter and light clothes in the summer. Dark material absorbs heat and helps to keep us warm: light material reflects heat and helps to keep us cool' - animation demonstrating this.
7'48" 'Clothes should be light, warm. Wool is the best material to be worn next to the skin - lighter in summer'. Footage of sheep being shorn and the wool collected. The film says clothes should be absorbant and that wool takes up moisture readily whilst cotton doesn't. A nurse demonstrates this by soaking a wool and a cotton garment in liquid and squeezing them out. The film states that cotton garments therefor get clammy, chilling the skin and can cause colds. 10'35" A young boy is shown wearing a soaking cotton shirt after playing. Shot of a child ill in bed.
