Description: Footage from the Imperial War Museum. A Greenwich Council and Woolwich Development Agency co-production. During WWI, there was a reemerging military importance of Woolwich and the arsenal. Footage of factories and railways signal the Industrial Age and the rapid technological change following the use of electricity. Advantages of industrial warfare in the Age of Steel presented via footage of gun production for the war effort. Specialized production from the workers of Woolwich remained in demand as all of the navy's new guns were designed here. Woolwich Arsenal also became the hub of repair, with a constant cycle of shipments to and from British and Allied armies around the world. A mass mobilization of the community for the war effort led to social changes which are with us today, including women and boys replacing men in the workplace - see them at work in the Arsenal, in the Munitions Plants.
