''The utilisation of electricity- Electricity in the service of man' - 1974 Faraday Lecture part 2
U-Matic video cassette Colour Sound 1974 33:59
Summary: Filmed 1973/1974 Faraday Lecture on the history of electricity
Title number: 20775
LSA ID: LSA/27334
Description: Presented by Dr A T Churchman of the Electricity Research Laboratory, Capenhurst. Part 2 picks up where part 1 left but with a small gap between recordings so some content missing. This was possibly the Newcastle lecture as there is reference to a Newcastle butcher in the film. It is also in colour whereas part 1 is black and white.
Part 2 opens with Maxwell's equations. Dr Churchman then follows with examinations of magnetic fields and their interactions between conductors and non-conductors. In addition to the many live practical demonstrations there are clips of experiments in the laboratory and cartoon graphics to aid the presentation. There are several references to Michael Faraday's experiments and reconstructions of these for a modern audience moving on to modern appliances such as the microwave oven. The lecture ends with a discussion about metallurgy and a film clip of plasma jets from the surface of the sun to highlight the power of the sun.
Further information: There are two recordings of this lecture; Newcastle and Edinburgh. Each recording has been separated in to two parts. For more information about the films including correspondence, administration and film scripts please refer to the IET Archives www.theiet.org/archives
