Title number: 20467
LSA ID: LSA/26984
Description: The opening scene of people riding the waterbus, clock marks 9:30. Following scenes show signs that set us in context for the journey. The first one reads “Water bus stop, Tower Pier”, setting the starting point, followed by a sign in the street saying “Royal Sovereign, to Southend & Margate, leaves here 9.00AM”.
We watch a large crowd board the boat, mostly adults smartly dressed. We see shots of the sailors carrying out their onboard duties, and the boat cruising along the river. The following scenes are all shot from onboard. There are shots showing the drawing of Tower Bridge from different zoom distances. Then we see different images of the scenery observed during the journey. People enjoy the commute, passengers smoking pipes, reading the newspaper, taking pictures, and wearing sunglasses, as they calmly travel down the Thames. The tone switches up to show groups of women dancing on deck.
The views of the journey include both larger and smaller boats being overtaken, cranes and factories in the distance, overall portraying an industrial scene. The boat arrives at Southend-on-sea, pulling in to the busy stop on the pier where people await. A few people get on, and then they are off again. We see more shots of passengers on board, a lovely shot of an older couple asleep on each other on the deck, close up of women smiling, men chatting and laughing, while others take in the view through binoculars and using cameras. They then arrive at Margate, where several smaller boats are docked, scattered across the water. The scenes that follow are from land, of people walking around, riding fair-like trains, and enjoying the destination. Then we are back on the boat, everyone gazing out onto the water as they make their way back. We re-encounter the drawing of Tower Bridge, which brings the film to an end.

Further information: The Royal Sovereign was built in 1937 by William Denny & Brothers, Dumbarton. The ship would take passengers on a “no-passport” weekend service, down the Thames, mooring below Tower Bridge. During World War II it was used to evacuate women and children from port towns in Essex and Kent to East Anglia.
