Further information: RCL type buses were once Green Line buses which originally ran on Green Line routes 721 and 722 via Ilford to Aldgate from Brentwood and Upminster. These were really comfortable buses with luggage racks and soft seats and were operated from 1965 until 1970 by London Transport. When London Country Buses began in 1970 they were used as ordinary buses and deteriorated rapidly. By 1979 London Transport were keen to acquire good working buses again, they brought the RCL back, at first as training buses but in 1980 someone decided to have them overhauled at Aldenham Works and the RLC ran route 149 between Edmonton and Liverpool Street.
