Further information: The filmmaker explains that this event was organised by Jim Blake (an old friend of the filmmaker) around Easter time from 1980 until 1992. There were usually about 30 buses on display, and probably around 15 would travel of the route 62 between Barking via Upney, Chadwell Heath Hainault to Barkingside which is where it used to run to, terminating outside the Library.
The Routemasters on Route 225 were not around for long, it was a short lived route from Becontree Heath via Ilford, Stratford to somewhere in Limehouse. The route only ran from September 1982 replacing parts of routes 25 and 86 at the outer ends and was converted to driver only buses in 1983/4 so the images in the film are a one off.
Route 261 was a similar route in South London between Bromley and Lewisham and the filmmaker went to Grove Park to film the brief shots seen on the film. This was also a route which only had Routemaster buses from around 1982 to 1984.
David Hamilton’s films form part of a collection which documents his enthusiasm for public transport (and especially buses) in the Borough of Redbridge and across London, capturing special days and everyday travel.
Whilst not all of these films show the London Borough of Redbridge, they are kept together as an archive of his filmmaking.
Locations: United Kingdom, London, Redbridge
