Summary: Buses at the Aldenham works open day
Title number: 20326
LSA ID: LSA/26825
Description: This film portrays buses on a windy day at St Edwards Way, Romford and at the roundabout, just as the buses were beginning to be replaced by newer vehicles. There is a glimpse of one with a silver roof and white paint around the lower deck, which was a bus painted in 1983 in a 1933 livery to commemorate the founding of London Transport. The film also highlights newer buses painted in a similar livery, two were completed and one is shown at Romford, and the first of the Leyland Titan buses which had a special livery proclaiming it a 'new bus for London Transport'.
The film of Aldenham Works was done in 1983 and illustrates a bus body being hoisted up and moved across onto a gantry during an overhaul. There are also views of buses outside on display.
Credits: Hamilton, David (Filmmaker)
Further information: The 1983 bus painted in 1933 livery was sold and still exists in this colour scheme and can now be seen at bus rallies. It was painted at the old Seven Kings bus garage which is now a Homebase.
In relation to the Aldenham Works open day, all London buses went to Aldenham every 5 to 7 years for repair and would emerge as good as new, such was the standard of the work force. The depot was closed in the late 1980's due to the part privatisation of bus companies, where the depot was deemed redundant, it was demolished in the 1990s. The filmmaker only went twice to open days at Aldenham because you usually had to know someone in order to visit.
Locations: United Kingdom, London, Romford
